From Corporate Law to a Life That Finally Made Sense
The Life that looked perfect... except it WAS NOT MY LIFE
For 20 years, I followed the traditional path.
I became a corporate lawyer. I rose through the ranks, led global legal teams, and sat on the board of over 20 companies and was responsible for billions of dollars of transactions.
From the outside, it looked like success.
On the inside, I was quietly fading.
I was missing time with my family.
Always chasing the next thing.
Spending money I didn’t need to spend, trying to feel something I couldn’t name.
At one point, I had over 50 guitars. Dozens of speakers. Hi-fi gear stacked in every corner of my home.
Then, on Valentines' Day 2016, over dinner, my wife looked at me and said something I’ll never forget:
“Maybe it’s time you sold some of your guitars.”
She wasn’t being cruel - we were in the middle of a house move, and so it made sense to declutter.
I always had a "good reason" to buy another guitar. I played guitar in church, and had gotten into collecting guitars as alternative investments, and loved telling her about how some had doubled in value since I bought them.
There was just one problem. I had no idea how to sell anything - I had never sold anything in my life. And honestly, I hated the idea of 'selling.'
So I went home and Googled, "how to sell guitars online".
That search led me to a video of a guy who said something that stopped me in my tracks:
"If you can learn to sell one thing online, you can sell anything online."
And he was teaching this to people who were living lives, and building income without trading time for money. People who had found a smarter way to live.
It was as if my eyes were open for the first time. I saw a completely different world, and I wanted in.
The Identity I Couldn’t Let Go Of
However, all I had ever known was how to be a lawyer.
I come from a family of lawyers, and my Dad even had a law firm I was expected to inherit.
I built my entire identity around law.
I was good at it, and even grew to enjoy it.
I had risen to the top of some of Singapore's most prestigious organisations.
Law gave me structure. It gave me purpose.
It gave me the illusion of safety.
But when I really looked at what it was costing me - my time, my health, my joy, even my family - I knew I couldn’t keep doing it.
I didn’t know what else I could do.
I didn't have a product.
I didn't know very much apart from the law
I didn’t have a business idea or a big plan.
But I had one thing - a decision.
A choice of whether to stay stuck, or to figure out what life could look like if I stopped running on autopilot.
I could not afford to fail.
My wife and I had just taken on a $4 Million mortgage.
This is on top of all the other financial commitments.
So I needed to be careful, and assess the risk thoroughly.
I also knew that I would not want a business where I ended up working harder at than my job!
Thankfully I had the experience of advising enough companies over the years to know what worked, and more importantly, what didn't.
So I used that to help me narrow down the sort of business to start.
I ruled out anything that needed recurring and ongoing costs, like a storefront, inventory, or a big team.
On the other hand, it should have upfront revenue, recurring revenue, and the potential to scale.
Finally, I landed on something that fit - a highly automated, online business.
There was just one problem...
Actually, three:
- I had no social media presence back then - and even today, you won’t find me dancing on TikTok or trying to go viral. I wanted a business that worked quietly in the background, without needing to perform for attention.
- I was not tech-savvy - in fact, my idea of business automation up till then was - getting my secretaries to print my emails, read them to me, while I dictated replies which they sent!Practically anyone who sends their own emails is already miles more tech-savvy than I was!
- I hated selling!
So this was going to be a massive leap.
But when I weighed the costs…
... Missing important family moments
... Hitting the income ceiling at work
... Compulsively spending just to feel alive
... Realizing retirement wasn’t something I could afford - not the way I was going anyway…
I knew I had to take the leap.
All I knew was how to be a lawyer
I walked away from the only professional identity I had ever known—without a backup plan, and without knowing if I’d ever replace the income I’d worked 20 years to build.
What happened next surprised even me:
Within 6 months, I had replaced my law income.
Not by building a huge company. Not by going viral.
But by learning how to set up simple, digital systems that created income without needing to be present 24/7.
No office. No team. No inventory. No pressure.
And for the first time in my life… I could breathe.
The turning point (an embarrasing moment)
When I first started making money online, I was too embarrased to say how much I made.
One of my mentors, Justin Woolf, called me out on that - and just look how red I turn when I have to admit I made over USD30,000 in my first month marketing...
What I Found on the Other Side of “Success”
I found space.
To think.
To create.
To live.
I spent more time with my family. I had breakfast with my kids. I felt present again.
And I realized something no one teaches you when you’re climbing the ladder:
The next level of life doesn’t come from chasing more.
